Get a Gravatar and a Disqus Account

-

Here is Tip 3 from our Top 10 Social Media Resolutions for 2010 list:  Get a Gravatar and a Disqus Account.

gravatarTired of seeing a generic icon when you post blogs or comment on them? Then get a Gravatar! A globally recognized avatar, a Gravatar is a picture that is associated with your email address. Because the image is linked to your email address rather than uploaded on each individual site; your Gravatar will follow you from site to site, appearing beside your name when you comment or post on a blog. Having a picture lends credibility to all of your blog posts and comments. Interested in getting a Gravatar? It is simple:
1.    Visit www.gravatar.com
2.    Click on the box in the left corner that says “Log in to, or Sign up for, Gravatar” scroll down to signup.
3.    Follow the steps from there and you’re good to go.

If you want to add another email address, just click add a new email and repeat the steps. You can choose different images for different emails, or just have one default picture for all of your accounts.

DisqusNow that you have a Gravatar, make sure to visit www.disqus.com to create a Disqus profile. Creating this profile will allow you to track and manage your comments across the web. Fellow bloggers can rate your comments, and you can demonstrate your expertise.

The best part? Your Gravatar image automatically links to your Disqus account, making it extremely simple to set up. All you need is a username, email address and password and you’re good to go. Disqus will walk you through the process of linking your account to other social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. If you want your friends, family and or colleagues to see your comments this makes it easy.

If that information isn’t something you want to share, then skip that step. You can go back and modify your settings later. After you’ve decided which Connections you want to enable, click on Public Info and fill out your bio. This information will be visible to anyone who should come around looking for your public profile. Think like Twitter here and keep it short and sweet. If someone’s interested in your full life story, they can read the bio on your Web site.
Now commenting on blogs is easier than ever! With a picture and profile you’ll always know what you said and where you said it.
