A Day in the Life of a Graphic Designer

a day in the life of a graphic designerRicky Bakosh joined Marketing RELEVANCE in March 2017 to design graphics and creative for the agency and its clients. The work of a graphic designer forms the visual crux of our marketing business. From landing pages to physical signage, from color choices to font selection, how a graphic is designed will affect how effective it is in extending a message. Hold on for an explosion of creative and color as Ricky takes us through a day in his life.

Q; What do you do first thing in the morning?

A: The first thing I do every morning is open my phone and read up on tech and art blogs. It turns on my brain and puts me in the right frame of mind for design. When I get to work, I open Google Hangouts and check my email. I never know if something cropped up within the hour that the Atlanta office opens before the Chicago office. I always check to make sure there aren’t any fires that I can help extinguish. Sometimes a client has a last minute opportunity to participate in a magazine or needs to send an eblast to announce something new at their company. We do our best to accommodate last minute graphic needs.

Q: Do you have a set schedule every day?

A: Every day my schedule revolves around various client needs and deadlines for their creative. My day is hardly a set schedule and always has moving targets. The most challenging thing about my job is remaining creative throughout the day, jumping from client to client, and never running out of “juice” for each of them. Luckily for me, there is endless supply of inspirational material out there to keep me in the right headspace to take on just about any task. Whether I am brainstorming with a new client about a new topic, scanning new design blogs for inspiration, scouring photo sites for awesome ideas for imagery, reading email newsletters and flyers for ideas or building out a campaign, I am always focused on being creative and collaborative. That is also why I enjoy writing music and jamming with my band.

Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job?

A: The most rewarding part of my job is when the client and I work together to bring a concept to life. The collaboration between my best practices and their ideas all working around their brand is my favorite part of the process. In every project, I learn something. How our clients think, what keeps them focused, what inspires them to do what they do is always interesting, and it keeps me challenged to deliver a cool and effective concept that will blow them and their target market away while achieving their goals.

Q: How do you prioritize your time?

A: I prioritize my day based on level of importance, and also drop dead dates. On the creative side, things can shift at a moment’s notice, so properly managing time, and anticipating client feedback is key to being successful in a creative role. Keeping an open mind and using plenty of different ideas to build whatever idea or concept I am delivering keeps me excited every single day, and focused on building award-winning creative designs.

I am always looking for a new challenge, and one of the most effective ways to deliver the best message to the target market is visually. ‘Sexy & effective’ is the motto here at Marketing RELEVANCE. If you are looking for sexy and effective designs that deliver your message to your target market in a way that prompts action, let us help. We are great at that.
