Duck, Duck, GOOSE!

DuckDuckGoWhen conducting a search online, it can start to feel like a big game of “Duck, Duck, Goose” to find the results you’re looking for. And, with many search engines keeping track of your data to filter what they deem as “relevant” search results, it may seem nearly impossible. However, one of the newest search engines on the market, DuckDuckGo is attempting to bring online search back to a simpler time.

The main premise and driving differentiator behind DuckDuckGo is that it does not track users, which means it doesn’t generate its search results based on previous searches or other users’ interests. Another big difference isn’t cluttered with ads, leaving you with a much cleaner, organic search results page.

Launched in 2011 by Gabriel Weinberg out of Valley Forge Pa., the search engine has been picking up steam as of late increasing its searches from 10 million a month in October 2011 to 50 million plus in March 2013 (which is more searches than AOL received in the same month). The site was also recognized as one of the Top 100 Websites of 2011 by PCMag and as the 2011 Readers’ Choice Winner for Best Search Engine by

If you’re reluctant to give DuckDuckGo a try because you love all of the doodles and extra features that Google has to offer, it has them too. Users can find everything from calculators and conversion charts to web design cheat sheets and lists of upcoming concerts. Plus, the search engine will dress up Dax (their mascot duck) to celebrate special holidays such as Andy Warhol’s birthday.

Having another search engine alternative means that you should add or consider this during the search engine optimization (SEO) process. Not all search engines are built the same, so you might see dramatically different rankings from one search engine to another.
