Google Wave – a shared experience

Competition for Facebook?

Google’s newest breakthrough product is  ‘Wave.’ This product provides a platform for users to combine web browsing, photos, contacts, email and documents into a shared experience.

Wave is a real-time stream of data, user interactions are recorded and can be played back. This allows users to view revisions to documents as well as the progression of user discussions.

In the enterprise software environment, Google aims to compete with Microsoft’s Exchange technologies. The key difference lies in the open source platform Google is offering developers. The open source software movement will likely produce functionality Microsoft may struggle to match.

Wave is also going to provide stiff competition to the social networking market dominated by Facebook and MySpace. The real-time aspect of Wave, along with its long list of features, will provide an alternative to those who want to productively engage with others.
