Instagram Takes Photo Sharing to a New Level

Photo Sharing SiteWith more than 100 million users, Instagram has quickly become one of the most popular online photo sharing apps. The smartphone app has even become so notorious that many users have adopted the saying, “if you didn’t Instagram it, it didn’t happen.” For those who are a little behind the times, Instagram is fun and quirky way to share your life with friends through pictures.

So, exactly why is it so popular among both individuals and brands? One of the most important reasons is that visuals are more impactful than copy. When selling a product, no matter what it is, your consumer wants to see photos. Instagram is an easy to use form of low-cost artistic photography. What’s even better is that it integrates well with other social media platforms, including Facebook.

If your business hasn’t quite caught on to the Instagram movement, you’re not alone. However, many businesses are quickly adopting this tool, and Interbrand reports that 40 percent of their top 100 companies are using it.

Here are a few examples of how businesses are using Instagram:

  • Audi posts cool photos of their cars and asks followers to post photos of their own cars
  • Starbucks asks customers to post photos of people doing interesting things while drinking Starbucks coffee
  • Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream asks their customers to post photos that promote their lifestyle brand – “euphoria” (with or without ice cream), “what euphoria is to me”
    • They’ve used their customer’s submissions in advertising
  • Comodo, a NY restaurant, asks customers to post photos of their menu items
  • Nike posts photos of people wearing their products
  • Clothing brand ASOS posts behind-the-scene fashion show photos and asks customers to post photos of themselves wearing their clothes
  • Energy drink Redbull promotes its lifestyle brand by posting photos of extreme sports
  • Jeweler Tiffany & Co. posts photos of their stores and products

In addition to posting photos of your products, customers using your products and encouraging customer interaction, many businesses have taken to launching photo sharing contests. For example, Cambria recently launched an Instagram contest called “Your Favorite Memory,” where they are encouraging followers to Instagram their family member and share it with them for a chance to win an iPhone 5.
