Pew Survey: Sixty-Two Percent of Americans Post or Share Visual Moments Online

Visual on FacebookDo you share photos online? Well, you are certainly not alone. A new survey from the Pew Research Center Internet Project finds that more than half of Internet users post or share photos or videos online.

The survey shows that posting and sharing photos and videos online is now an integral part of the online social experience with 62 percent of respondents (adult Internet users) either posting an original photo or video or sharing images or videos that they have found. The number of individuals posting or sharing photos or videos online has increased significantly since 2012, when 56 percent of respondents reported doing so.

Fifty-four percent of respondents posted original photos or videos online, in other words, photos or videos that they themselves created. This number is up from 46 percent last year. This group is referred to as creators. Of the group, 52 percent have posted photos that they have taken, and 26 percent have posted videos that they have taken.

Forty-seven percent of respondents shared photos or videos that they have found online and reposted them on social media sites designed for sharing images with others. This group is referred to as curators. Of this group, 42 percent of shared a photo, and 36 percent shared a video.

The survey found that 40 percent of Internet users are both creators and curators.

So what is the reason for the increase of posting and sharing? According to the study, the widespread popularity and use of mobile devices, which have created a platform for mobile photo and video sharing, is a big part of the recent momentum. In this survey, 92 percent of Americans owned a cell phone, and 58 percent owned a smartphone. Mobile apps like Instagram and Snapchat make it possible for users to post and share photos and videos. In this survey, nine percent of respondents use Snapchat and 18 percent use Instagram.
