The Business Etiquette of LinkedIn Endorsements

LinkedIn EndorsementsLinkedIn is everyone’s favorite form of professional networking, and it’s no wonder with all of the features it has to offer to everyone from seasoned business professionals to recent undergrads just starting out.

One of the most useful features of LinkedIn is the new endorsements section. Endorsements allow professionals to validate and recognize the skills and expertise their peers have added to their profile. If you think your connection is great at what they do, now you can easily let them know without having to write a full recommendation!

Here’s how to endorse your connections:

  • At the top of a connection’s profile, you’ll see recommended endorsements, simply click on the skills you want to endorse them for.
  • You can also suggest additional skills.
  • You can also endorse them in the new Skills & Expertise section.

Once you’ve been endorsed by someone, LinkedIn will notify you via email and on your personal profile. You’ll be able to see who has endorsed you by visiting your own Skills & Expertise section, you can accept any new skills recommended by your colleagues or you can always add more skills you may have originally forgotten.

The new endorsements section does raise a few questions when it comes to business etiquette.

  • What if someone endorses me, but I don’t want others to see it? Simply click on their face next to the skill they have endorsed you for. Then, you’ll be able to select the hide endorsement button.
  • If someone endorses me, do I have to endorse them? Endorsing someone doesn’t take a lot of time, and it’s always good to return positive favors!
  • Is endorsing someone even worth my time? On the whole, I wouldn’t suggest going on an endorsing spree, but if your peer has done exceptionally well at something or if you know they are looking for a new job in a specific field, endorsing them could potentially help them out.
