Think Before You Post

tips for posting to social mediaWhen you were in school, your permanent record held all of your grades, achievements and failures. In life, you also have a permanent record, the Internet. Sure, you may think you’ve “deleted” that photo that you probably shouldn’t have posted, but once something hits the world wide web, it never completely disappears. However, you aren’t alone in the act of deleting content from the Internet in hopes that no one saw it. In fact, according to a new survey from, 29 percent of Facebook users between the ages of 18 and 34 think that a photo, comment or other information they posted could someday affect their employment status.

However, the statistics don’t end there. Twenty-one percent of these young social media savvy users have removed or taken down the offensive content because they fear the repercussions of leaving it up. But, on a more positive note, these users are also aware of the potential consequences of what they post with 82 percent saying they pay attention to their privacy settings and only 6 percent saying they pay no attention and just use the default settings.

These statistics also have an important impact for businesses. Just like young social media users may fall awry when it comes to posting online, businesses must also monitor what they are posting. Your followers expect to see posts that are relevant to your business, as well as grammatically correct. Facebook makes it especially easy for social media managers to accidentally post content meant for their personal page onto a company page. If you do make a mistake (everyone does!), make sure to rectify it as quickly as possible. If your customers notice your mistake before you do, be sure to thank them for pointing it out to you and make any apologies that are necessary.
